About Jivamukti Yoga® NEW YORK

Founded in New York City in 1984 by artists, activists, and authors Sharon Gannon and David Life, Jivamukti Yoga® is an integrated practice and teaching school dedicated to the living tradition and evolution of yogic wisdom. Bringing together asana, meditation, music, activism, bhakti (devotion), somatic studies and philosophy, the method offers a path of spiritual exploration grounded in compassionate action and growth in community. With more than 17 independently owned and operated Jivamukti Yoga® schools around the world, Jivamukti remains an expansive global community rooted in wisdom traditions and compassion for all beings.

(re)Founded by HaChi Yu, Jivamukti Yoga® New York’s new Brooklyn flagship carries these teachings forward in the city where they began, welcoming new and experienced practitioners through daily classes, workshops, teacher trainings, and cultural gatherings. Through our nonprofit, Sharanam Institute BK, we make these sacred practices more accessible through free and low-cost community programs, scholarships, and community partnerships. Our mission is creating an urban refuge, a school where practices expand, and physical, mental, and spiritual health is accessible to all. A space where wisdom grows and finds expression in everyday life.

The Five Tenets of Jivamukti Yoga

These five principles form the foundation of Jivamukti Yoga, connecting physical practice with a compassionate and conscious way of life.

Ahimsa — Compassion
Living with compassion for all beings through nonviolence, ethical veganism, and care for animals and the environment.
Bhakti — Devotion
Cultivating devotion through chanting, heartfelt intention, and offering, with realization of the Divine or true Self as the aim of practice.
Dhyana — Meditation
Practicing meditation to quiet the mind and connect with the steady, unchanging awareness within.
Nada — Deep listening
Developing deep listening through music, chanting, the teacher’s voice, and silence to bring harmony to body and mind.
Shastra — Sacred study
Studying ancient yogic scriptures and teachings, including Sanskrit chanting, and reflecting on their meaning in everyday life.

WHAT IS JIVAMUKTI YOGA?

A practice of connection.

The whole practice.

The Jivamukti method brings movement, study, devotion, meditation and deep listening into one practice. Physical sequences offer a way to explore how we relate to ourselves, other beings and the Earth.

Asana and relationship.

In Jivamukti, asana is understood as a relationship with life, as well as a physical posture. Practice invites steadiness, joy and care into that relationship.

Compassion in action.

The teachings encourage choices guided by non-harming, including care for animals and the environment. What we learn on the mat can shape how we live beyond it.
